Tinder Box International was founded in 1928 by Edward Kolpin, who opened his first Tinder Box store in Santa Monica, California, after selling tobacco and pipes in his family’s pharmacy. Kolpin ran his original store for 78 years until his passing in 2007. Tinder Box International began franchising in 1965, with the first franchise location opening in Hawaii, one of the first franchises in American history. The store chain has since grown to more than 150 stores across the United States.
Through the years, as Ed Kolpin ran his store in Santa Monica, he catered to the needs of Hollywood personalities such as Marilyn Monroe, George Burns, Yul Brynner, Clark Gable and Bing Crosby. His custom made pipes can be seen in Hollywood movies and on the covers of Bing Crosby albums.
